This is analyses of the challenges that Mark Watney ( played by Matt Damon) faced in the movie The Martian. And of course SPOILERS!!!
So the first challenge Mark faced is water. So the earth provides a lot of this, but mars dose not provided as much as the earth dose so he has to make it. What he dose is gets some leftover fuel and heats it up to get the CO2 and burned it with H2 and in a scientific equation that would make C and H2O. Of course NASA has everything there fire proof and to do that he needs to burn it so he find on of his crew mate's wooden cross and get's shaving from it to burn. After almost killing himself up, he eventually makes water chemistry FTW. Now how could we more sustainable do this, because he was a bit tight on manpower and resources, so let's say there all marooned on Mars with no help for x years, what could they do? Well I found this thing that NASA has that can convert urine to drinkable water, which we all pee so this would be helpful to install.
Another challenge that he faced was food. So we have scene the dawn of man been able to get food by hunting and gathering. But then someone decided let's start farming theses plants instead of just eating and going on. Mark loves that person because he need that to survive. So after dividing the rations he decides he needs to grow something, so he takes a page out of Ireland's book and grew potatoes. So I am going to cut the whole science of Mars soil with Nitrogen ( If you what all that and more watch this Film Theory: Is The Martian's POOP SCIENCE Full of CRAP?) but what he dose is gets his poop and his crew mates poop and uses it to fertilize the soil. So truly the answer to surviving on Mars is Botany and Chemistry and like twenty other things. So how could we on Mars do this, Other than bring more food he has it done perfectly. The only thing I could think of it s lamp that could cover the green house an emulate the sun light to help the spuds grow faster.
And his last challenge today is Oxygen. Earth has trees that produces O for us, so as long as we have trees we will breath. So how dose he solve this problem? Well he just dose what he did to make water and but instead of addition it subtraction he takes out the C in CO2 and tada he breaths. He could have also used the water to make O you say, well that is just a waste of good water. Now what we could do to make this a more widespread thing we could do what we do for submarines which is a CO2 scrubber that doses Marks job in a breeze. So that was the science of the Martian my favorite 2nd favorite space movie of last year go cheek it out if you haven't, it a good time I promise.
