To make a storm of that massive of scale you need everything to happen perfectly ( like most things in meteorology). For any major storm what you have to have is competing air masses. Once you have that it just depends on where it happens and what the temperature is. For a blizzard you must have a large storm cloud that turns to snow, and then some wind ( there two air masses will be called Horde and Alliance ( "pls do well Warcraft movie, you are my only hope" - Video game movies)). Tornadoes need the spin for their funnel clouds, and Hurricanes just need an Ocean ( to be called a Hurricane it might want to select the Atlantic).
